It’s really something unique that we’re offering to the community,” Borgstrom said.Īlthough Domus Fare is normally open for breakfast and lunch only during the week, the restaurant will transform into a jazz club on Thursday night as such, it will offer a dinner menu that is just as enticing as the live music. I was really impressed with how many prepaid for their tickets, including dinner, and even more impressed by how many walk-ins we had, especially students.” “You know in Fredonia, we have lots of concerts at the college and even at the Opera House, but this is like dinner theater. “My capacity here is 100 and we were almost at the top of that. “We were nearly sold out at the first event in September,” he said. Borgstrom, whose background includes fine dining in the Rochester area, said that Jazz at Domus Fare reminds him of the atmosphere of his former restaurants that hosted live performances. “Yes,” was Domus Fare co-owner Isaac Borgstrom’s enthusiastic response. Simply the question was, ‘Would you be interested in having some jazz performances here?'” “Domus Fare is about the right size, and it was already a successful restaurant. “I went around to various places to find out where something like this could occur,” Boelter continued. Rather, a jazz club - or society - could occupy a variety of public spaces to offer events, workshops and even contests to the local community. “This has been an opportunity to curate a community of American pop music enthusiasts and performers to create a different sense of community.”īoelter, who works alongside five other community members on the Board of Directors, discovered that a jazz club need not be a physical location. ![]() “I wanted to recreate the idea or experience of a small jazz group like that here,” Weiser explained. There, he and two other faculty jazz musicians performed at the Argos Inn, a boutique hotel and cocktail bar, where they cultivated a strong sense of community and a following. Weiser, himself, brought the idea of a faculty trio of performers to the Fredonia Jazz Society based on his prior teaching experience in Ithaca. As I talked with various people around town, it became quite apparent to me that it was something that would be of interest.” “Having a jazz club in town would be a great way to link the community to the school and to give him visibility. “It was the hiring of Nick Weiser as a jazz pianist in the faculty that gave me the idea,” Boelter explained. Boelter, who retired from his position as director of the college’s School of Music in 2015, was instrumental in creating the Fredonia Jazz Society to highlight the musicians whom the college has brought to the area. If you're in the area, for example, visiting the college at Fredonia, Domus Fare is at the top of my list for dining suggestions.Karl Boelter, president of the Fredonia Jazz Society Board of Directors and professor emeritus at SUNY Fredonia, invites all to enjoy the impressive range of musical talent that the community has to offer. Domus Fare, which I'm guessing means home c ooking, more or less, is just how I can describe the dishes we had. That was incredibly quick when you consider that the place was understaffed, as most restaurants currently are. We went to one and everything was set right in under five minutes. There were no empty tables that didn't also need a quick cleaning. There wasn't a host but there was a sign telling us to seat ourselves. Casual atmosphere, home cooking, welcoming staff, quick service.
